Descendants of Jacob Borer of Baden-Baden, Germany

Believed but unproven to be the father of three Bohrer/Borer men in York and Lancaster Cos., PA who seem to be brothers and worked in the iron furnaces there.

Or of George Bohrer/Borer of Battenburg, Germany

 

Generation One

1. There are two theories as to the parents of Jacob Borer (I), which I hope will soon be resolved:

First, that he was the son of Jacob Borer of Baden-Baden, Germany, who married Miss Fuchs (German for Fox), and died in Germany, though three sons immigrated to Pennsylvania about 1750.

Second, that he was the son of George Bohrer, both born in Battenburg, Wurtumburg District, Germany -- George in 1642, and Jacob in 1693. George died in Virginia in 1693.

Generation Two

4. Jacob2 Borer I (Jacob1) was born in 1728 at Germany, if son of Jacob Borer; or in 1693 if son of George Bohrer. He married Barbara Judy (Tschudi), daughter of Martin Judy Jr. and Rosanna Schafner, in 1753 at PA or VA (when he was either 25 or 60 years of age). In 1758 Jacob Borer and Martin Judy were on tax rolls in Elizabeth Twp., Lancaster Co., PA. From 1762-65 he and Peter and Martin Borer were listed as workers at Elizabeth Furnace, York Co., PA. (York Co. was organized out of Lancaster in 1749.)

Martin Judy (Tschudi), Jr. and wife Rosina/Rosanna Schafner were lace makers from Canton Basel, Switzerland, who immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1738. They may have moved west to Ft. Pitt (now Pittsburgh) on or before 1760, with their cousins, the Johannes Judy family, to trade with the Indians. Both Martin and Johannes were skilled traders. In 1761, they moved straight south to the South Branch Valley of the Potomac River, with their son Martin Judy and daughter Barbara. I do not know whether Barbara was born in Switzerland or in Pennsylvania and her birthdate is estimated at bet. 1735-40?

Jacob Borer died on 19 Oct 1778 at Romney, WV; where his will, written 19 Oct 1776 at Hampshire Co., VA (now WV), was filed:

 In the name of God amen. I JACOB BORER of the Co. of Hampshire and Commonwealth of Virginia, being of sound mind and memory thanks be to God calling to mind the mortality of all flesh and that it is appointed for all men once to die do this nineteenth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight make and publish this my last will and testament in the way and manner following. First and principally I recommend my soul to God that gave it and my body to the dust nothing doubting but (?) that I shall receive the same again at the general resurrection of all flesh according to the mighty power of God and as touching my worldly estate with which it has pleased God to bless me with. I will and bequeath in the manner and way following:
Imprimis, after funeral expenses paid; I will to my beloved wife BARBERY the whole of my personal estate to raise the children on this proviso that she may think convenient. To keep them together and if to the contrary then the estate to be equally divided after her thirds among my children (BARBARY, CHARLES, MARY, JACOB, ELIZABETH, THOMAS, MARTAIN, ROSANA).
MARTAIN and ROSANA I will to each of ten pounds extraordinary ~ more than their share.
Thusly I do will to my second son JACOB that one half of the plantation that my house and improvement is on and the other half to my son THOMAS to be put in those (his? or thine?) possession when of age: and they my two sons JACOB & THOMAS are to pay eight pounds apiece to be equally divided among their brothers and sisters.
I do thereby constitute and appoint my wife BARBERRY, JACOB HANKLE & J'N WILSON Excr. to this my last will and testament hereby revoking all my former wills rectifying & confirming this and this only to be my last will and testament witness where of I have here unto set my; my hand and seal in the day and year first above.

5. Charles3 Borer (Jacob2, Jacob1) was born circa 1758 at Lancaster Co., PA. He married Sidney Wees circa 1782. He died on 20 Jun 1843 at Pendleton Co., WV; buried in Rippleman Ceme., Knob Rd., Grant Co., WV. He began military service on 1 Oct 1777 served in Revolutionary war, Pvt., VA Troops. He ended military service in 1782; in summer. He appeared on the census of 1782 at Hampshire Co., VA; State census listed Charles Borrer with wife and another person. He appeared on the census of 1784 at Hampshire Co., VA; in State census were Charles with wife and 2 or 3 children. He appeared on the census of 1786 at Hardy Co., VA; was on list of tax payers. He appeared on the census of 1787 at Hardy Co., VA; with no other males 16-21, two horses, one cow. 6. Jacob3 Borer II (Jacob2, Jacob1) was born circa 1763; Dale G. Borror Sr. wrote, "Jacob II (born 1763) married in 1785 and had Jacob III in Mar 1796." He married Magdalene Strader, daughter of Christopher Strader and Elizabeth Bush, in VA in 1785. He died on 11 Aug 1804 at Ross Co., OH; as a result of his weakened condition from wounds received while serving as a Pvt. in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary war; was buried in Strader Ceme., Ross Co. Little is known of his service except that he was 19 years old. He was awarded a yearly pension of $30. His occupation in military records was shown as "planter." According to family history (as told in Borror's Corners, Oct 1991), "Jacob suffered untold hardships in the way which left him in a weakened condition that contributed to his death in 1804, apparently from heat exhaustion after carrying home a deer." Land grants were obtained for each of his children by Col. Rose, according to Mary C. Borror. He appeared on the census of 1800 at Hardy Co., VA (now WV); was listed as Jacob BORAH.

7. Thomas3 Borer (Jacob2, Jacob1) was born circa 1766? at Hampshire Co., VA (now WV); or in PA? Was not of age when his father's will was written had to be born by 1758. He married Eve Catherine _____ Borer circa 1775? He died before 5 Jun 1810 at Pendleton Co., WV. He appeared on the census of 1787 at Hardy Co., VA (now WV); with one other male age 16-21 (born 1766-1771). He left a will on 5 Jun 1810 at Pendleton Co., WV; his signature looked like BOHRER; will called Peter, Adam, and Abraham "three youngest sons," and the others were called "seven legatees." Andrew was a witness and presented the will for probate.

He married Elizabeth Robins, daughter of William Robins and Catherine _____ Robins, on 6 Oct 1810 at St. Clair Co., IL. He died on 1 Jun 1839 at Greene Co., IL; intestate, leaving his wife Elizabeth and a son Abraham. He began military service on 3 Mar 1812 at IL Muster roll of the mounted riflemen detached from the 2nd Regiment of militia, Illinois Territory, for a three months tour, by order of the Commander-in-Chief, March 3, 1812.

52. Elijah4 Borer (Martin3, Jacob2, Jacob1) was born on 6 Oct 1802 at IL; birthplace from 1880 census of son Isaac. He married Celia Williams, daughter of Aaron Williams Sr. and Charity Nation, on 10 Jul 1828 at Greene Co., IL. He died circa 1843 at Perry Co., AR. He appeared on the census of 1830 at Greene Co., IL; did NOT have "foreign born" checked; age 30-40, a male under 5, a female under 5, female 15-20, and a female 60-70 (his mother?).

67. James Isaac5 Borrer (Elijah4Borer, Martin3, Jacob2, Jacob1) was born on 13 Jan 1830 at Greene Co., IL. He married Sophronia Neeley on 12 Jun 1856. He died on 29 Apr 1899 at Gonzales Co., TX, at age 69. He was buried on 1 May 1899 at Waelder City Ceme., Waelder, Gonzales Co., TX.
