ELLIS WILLIAMS ~ Quaker, was born 1621 in Marion, Pembrokeshire, Wales, immigrated to New Castle, DE, and died 19 Apr 1691 in Merion, Chester Co., PA. Ellis and his wife ELLIN had two sons, ROBERT born 1647 in Wales, and JAMES born ca 1655 probably in DE.

The earliest court record found of ROBERT was 5 Sep 1672 when he filed a complaint about "one of ye souldyrs at New Castle." He bought land 1681 at or near Goshen Mo. Mtg. house, Goshen Twp. in Chester Co., PA, and was a widower when he md. Gwen Cadwallader there on 18 Apr 1691. They had 10 children and Robert died at Goshen in 1734.

The earliest court record found of JAMES WILLIAMS was 9 Nov 1676 when "James Williams and Henry Vandenberg to appraise attached house of Anthony Hendrix" (whose son became Hendrickson) in New Castle Co., DE. In 1677 he was a juror, in 1678 on the tax list, between 1682-84 a member of the Assembly, in 1685 he a Justice of the Peace, in 1685 a member of the Assembly. About that time, he and wife MARY must've moved to Chester Co., PA, for in Feb 1685 "James and Hendrick Williams were members of the Province of Pennsylvania as members of the Governor's Council." Their children were daughter SARAH, sons AMOS, JAMES, and ZACHARIAS. James died by 1719 when John Hendrixson sought title of James Williams, deceased, portion of land bought 1701 by them and others.

We descend from ZACHARIAS, born ca 1700 at Chester Co., PA, who md. ANNE ELLETT 30 May 1733 at Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA. He left a will dated 28 Jul 1739 at Sadsbury, Chester Co., PA, naming wife ANNA, sons AMOS and JAMES, daughter RACHEL, brother WM. MARSH, brother AMOS, recorded 16 May 1741 at Sadsbury, Chester Co., PA. ~ His son AMOS md. PHEBE ALLEN (daughter of Morrell Allen and Alice Scarlett) and left PA on certificate from Sadsbury Mo. Mtg. to settle in NC, but took several years to get there; then moved on to Greene Co., TN; their children included ALLEN, surely AARON, THOMAS and several others. AMOS's son AARON WILLIAMS, Sr., our forebear, md. CHARITY NATION 1803 in Jefferson Co., TN, served in the War of 1812, immigrated to IL by 1818, and from there to Conway Co., AR ca 1833, and died in Perry Co., AR ca 1843.

2. James Williams (Ellis Williams1) was born ABT 1655 in New Castle, DE, and died BETWEEN 1701 AND 1717 in Red Clay Creek, New Castle Co., DE. He married Mary _____ ABT 1690? She was born ABT 1670? in PA, and died BEF 1731. or Wales? birthdate/place and father unproven, but may have been a brother of Robert, the earliest Williams of record in New Castle, DE ~ both men later moved to Chester Co., PA ~ where, when he first appeared in court, "James Williams and Henry Vandenberg to appraise attached house of
Anthony Hendrix" (whose son became Hendrickson) 1. James was Justice of the Peace 1685 New Castle Co., DE, 2 and died between 1701-1717 probably in Red Clay Creek, New Castle Co., DE, bef 1719 when John Hendrixson sought title of James Williams, deceased, portion of land bought 1701 by them and others.3

James was a member of the Assembly bet 1682-1684 and 1686 in New Castle, and on the tax list with Edward and Dirck William 1, a juror, and the plaintiff in a case vs. Edward Williams, defendant. He signed a release, James Williams to John Bercquer for 1/3 interest in 1200 acres on Black Bird Creek, DE 2. He and Henry William were witnesses to testimony of Edmond Calwell, pertaining to quit rent of Priest Lassa Carolus, stating that land in Upland had been sold to Justa Anderson. Justa Anderson appears in the tax list in New Castle with the Williams family 2. James sold land, as reported at a session of the Commissioners at Philadelphia, 9 Sep 1702, "Hippolytus La Fevre of New Castle purchased of Margaret Sherry, a front lott in New Castle, 1695, which was purchased of James Williams in '92, who purchased it of Hans Codeny, 5th mo. 1682, who sold said lott to the said Williams, bounded eastward with Hendrick Williams, southward the Strand and westward with Gisbert Dickson and N. with Land Street etc. 51 1/2 foot. He desires patent. Granted." 2

James and Hendrick Williams were members of the Province of Pennsylvania as members of the Governor's Council 03 FEB 1685 New Castle Co., DE 4. James witnessed the will of Dr. Thomas Spry and was named executor 3.

3. Robert Williams (Ellis Williams1) was born 1647 in Marion, Pembrokeshire, Wales, and died 1734 in Goshen Twp., Chester Co., PA. He married Gwen Cadwallader 18 APR 1691 in Merion, Chester Co., PA, daughter of John Cadwallader and Sarah Roberts. She was born 1670 in Radnar, DE. Note: he was a widower when they married at home of Hugh Roberts. He immigrated in 1681 to Goshen, Chester Co., PA, and bought land owned by Griffith Owen, at or near the present Goshen Friends Meeting, claimed to be the first settler in the
township. He was sometimes called "King of Goshen." By tradition, their first residence was a cave, and on occasion when their hearth fire went out he had to go seven miles to get it renewed. The first Goshen Meeting was held at their house, it is said.2 3 He complained of John Ogle "one of ye souldyrs at New Castle" 4

estate. To sons AMOS and JAMES my plantation I now enjoy, when 21, they paying 10 pounds each to daughter RACHEL WILLIAMS when she is of age. To brother WM. MARSH my saddle. Exec: BROTHER AMOS and wife ANNA. Wit: Henry MARSH, Gravener MARSH, Josiah KERR. Zacharias's tax assessment, together with brother James, was Zachary's first appearance. 2 He resided after 1733 near Altgen, PA. He married Anne Ellett 30 MAY 1733 in Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA. She was born ABT 1710?, and died AFT 16 MAY 1741 in Sadsbury, PA. buried beside 2nd husband, Thomas Bulla, now under Sadsbury Quaker Church since a portion burnt during the Revolutionary War and was rebuilt on some graves. Zachariah and Anne's stone house built 1731 near Altglen, PA, is still standing. It is clear that Anna's 2nd husband Thomas Bulla moved into the home, and in time purchased Amos and James' 2/3 of the house. 1 2
Anna, her children, and 2nd husband Thomas Bulla continued to live there. The house was to be left to the two boys, and in 1860-61 Thomas Bulla purchased it from the boys, per Juanita Jackson Kesler. A wing has been added (See Photos).

Occupation: wheelwright 1760; patented 300 acres of land, part of a 700-acre tract granted in 1731 to William Marsh, brother-in-law of Amos and James Williams, Jr. The 700 acres was finally divided, 300 acres to James Williams, eldest son of Amos; 200 acres to Henry Marsh, son of William Marsh; and 200 acres to Amos and James Williams, sons of Zachariah Williams. This leads to the conclusion that Sarah Williams, wife of William Marsh, was the oldest child of
James Williams in 1731 1 2 (see Wills of Chester County, Pennsylvania 1713-1748, by F. Edward W, p. 48).

25. Amos Williams (Zacharius Williams3, James Williams2, Ellis Williams1) was born 1734 in Sadsbury, Chester Co., PA, oldest child, date based on parents' 1733 marriage, his date of death in a IN county history 1 and died 1842? in Wayne Co., IN. He was under 21 when mentioned in will of his father Zacharius.4 At one point he was complained of as "speaking falsehoods." He and Phebe Allen declared their intention to marry on 17 Feb 1762; their 2nd declaration was 18 Feb 1762; and they married 17 MAR 1762 in Sadsbury Mo. Mtg., Lancaster Co., PA. Phebe was the daughter of Morrell Allen and Alice Scarlett, born Abt 1740? in PA. Both were Quakers. He was on a list of Quakers and Tories (also listed as a Tory was WILLIAM WILLIAMS) 1780 Montgomery Co., VA 2.

AHis occupation was cordwainer in 1760, and he moved away from PA in 1765. His wife and two children requested certificates to Cane Creek or New Garden Mo. Mtg., NC; he apparently went too. Amos resided 1 NOV 1783 in Montgomery Co., VA, when his son James married Mary Davis in New Garden Mo. Mtg., NC. He sent a letter received by Sadbury Mo. Mtg., PA, acknowledging his misconduct during his residence there.

Amos and family moved bet 1793-1795 to Eastern TN, and moved in 1816 to Wayne Co., IN, where he was deeded land by his son Allen. In the 1820 Wayne Co., IN, census, Amos was two doors from John and Rachel (Williams) WOODWARD and his household consisted of 1 male over 45 and one female over 45, so wife must have still been alive and with him.3 He was enumerated in Wayne Co. again in 1830. By 1840 he was in Shelby Co., IN. Two sides of their family say Amos lived to age 105.
