Carlo Brock in the census

In federal Census 23 Aug 1870, Dist. 32, Pct. 10, Manchester P.O., Clay Co., KY, p. 212:

hh 17-17 Aron Brock 52 farmer $200-$300, Barbary (Shepherd) 51 housekeeping, Gilbert 18 works on farm, Carelo 16 m. works on farm, Washington 15 works on farm, Elihue 14 works on farm, Malinda 12 at home, Martha 10 at home, Elijah 8, Dealey 3 f., and William Brown 20 works on farm; all b. KY and none over 8 could read or write; nextdoor lived Adron Napier 27 and wife Rebecca 33 family.

A few pages away, Carlow was listed again as age 18 "works on farm" in his older brother Amon's household, on 26 Aug 1870, in Dist. 32, Pct. 11, Manchester P.O., p. 244. Nextdoor lived their brother Shadrick Brock and family, and on next page their uncle Solomon Brock and family. None of these adults or children over 8 could read or write.

md. Polly Ann Jackson (14 Feb 1854-11 Apr 1936), daughter of Larkin Jackson & Elizabeth Burkhart,

on 5 Sep 1872, Magoffin Co., KY and by 1875 they had moved to Wayne Co., WV, along with some of his brothers.

In 1881-82, Carlo was working in a well, sending up buckets of rocks when the well caved in and killed him . He left his young widow with five children:

1. Millard Lee Brock, b. Dec 1873, Magoffin Co., KY

2. Lucinda "Lou" Brock, b. 11 Oct 1875, Wayne Co., WV

3. Marietta Brock, b. 1 Dec 1877, Wayne Co., WV

4. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Brock, b. 12 Sep 1879, Wayne Co., WV

5. Payton Brock, b. 16 Mar 1881, Wayne Co., WV

As widows must for survival in those days, Carlo's widow Polly Ann (aka Mary Paulina) remarried 29 Jul 1882, Wayne Co., to Robert R. Acres (Akers). They had 3 children:

6. Jacob Akers, b. Apr 1883, WV

7. Nannie Akers, b. Jul 1884, WV

8. Lillie "Lil" Akers, b. Feb 1888, WV

Robert R. Acres (b. 1856 in OH) died by 1890, leaving Polly now with 8 children. She md. (3rd) Johnny? Ratliff in 1890 and bore 3 more children:

9. Grace Ratliff, b. Jan 1891, WV

10. Myrtle Ratliff, b. Jan 1895, WV

11. Curtis Ratliff. b. Oct 1897, WV

Mr. Ratliff apparently died before the 1900 Butler Dist., Wayne Co., WV, census was taken on 14 Jun, for Polly Ratliff was enumerated as head of household #172-174:

Polly Ratliff head b. Feb 1855, age 45, married 10 years, children born to this mother 13, living 10, b. KY, father b. VA, mother b. KY; she was a farmer, mos. not employed 12, owned farm free of mortgage, could read and write;

and children (all single) b. WV, father b. KY, mother b. KY:

Two doors away was Polly's son Millard b. Dec 1873 (26) and family on a mortgaged farm:

NOTE: *Born on his grandfather Carlo's property which passed to Millard and was sold in 1900, one-month-old Roy E. Brock's name was changed to Goldie by time a neighbor was sent to the Wayne Co. court house to record it. But all his life his name was Charles Golden Brock. His sister Clara's son Charles Golden "Cutie" Summers. was named for him. (Wayne Co. Register of Births, p. 33-C)

Polly Ann Jackson Brock Akers Ratliff died 11 Apr 1936, McCommas Dist., RFD 2, Salt Rock, Cabell Co., WV, home of her granddaughter Halie and Early Ferguson; and is buried in Baylous Cemetery; informant on death certificate was W. M. Canard.

There were numerous Brock births in Wayne Co., WV in its 1879 Register of Births:
