He went by the name of
Hiram -- a Masonic name, indicating his father and probably his
grandfather were Masons, as Hiram and his sons were in Texas.
By occupation, he was a wagonmaker, as listed on the 1860, 1870,
and 1880 census records in Burnet Co., and a coffin maker.
A newspaper item (date
unknown, but after the advent of postal zip codes) read, "Mrs.
Robert W. West, 4120 Hartwood Dr., Ft. Worth 76109 hopes to publish
a book on the Daugherty family and needs information on Nicholas
Daugherty, a wagonmaker who settled in Springfield, Limestone
Co., TX, before 1850, and Hiram Daugherty, also a wagonmaker,
who lived in Burnet County in 1880. There are many wheelwrights
in this family and the Daugherty wagon used by the Army as an
ambulance is said to be the forerunner of today's recreational
vehicle. Mrs. Custer traveled in one, Mrs. West writes."
