1854 at KY; 2nd wife. He died on 17 Dec 1878 at Burnet Co., TX,
at age 65; buried in the Magill Ceme. near present Burnet Airport.
He rode horseback from Kentucky to Texas
with his friend Logan Vandeveer, arriving at Mina (Bastrop) municipality
in 1835. Magill immediately went into the mercantile business,
but his stock of goods (groceries) was taken over by the government
for army needs. The Republic of Texas later compensated him.
Both Magill and Vandeveer were members
of the noted Mina Volunteers during the Texas War for Independence
with Magill serving as 2nd Sgt. in Capt. Jesse Billingsley's Co.
until its disbandment on 1 Jun 1836. On 20 Jul of the same year
he joined Capt. Calvin Boales' ranging company. After the war
was concluded, Magill fought Indians throughout the Bastrop area
in 1835. He came to Burnet (then called Hamilton), which was part
of Williamson Co. at the time, with his friend Vandeveer, having
secured a contract from the Government to supply meat and feed
for Fort Croghan. Along with another pioneer, Noah Smithwick,
they were appointed to feed menacing Indians of the region, hoping
to hold them in abeyance between 1848 and 1849 at Burnet, TX.
He moved his family from Bastrop to Burnet. He established his
home and reared his children on the tract of land granted him
just outside the south and southwestern limits of Burnet, for
services rendered in the War of Independence. He and Vandeveer
lived in close proximity and were such good friends both in Bastrop
and Burnet that each named a son for the other. Both men were
Masons in 1850 at Burnet, TX. He was appointed, with R. H. Hall
and Logan Vandeveer as a committee to create Burnet County, and
with Peter Kerr and Samuel Holland became the supporting pillars
of the new county. They all had a part in determining, after a
bitter dispute, to make Hamilton (now Burnet) the county seat
in 1850. Magill was also the administrator of the Conrad Rohrer
grant, and sold the Mormon Mill site to the Mormons in Feb 1852
at Burnet, TX.
