13. Joel3 Longley (William2, Joseph1) was born on 1 Sep 1791 at Rockbridge, Rockbridge Co., VA; "2nd son," date in his sworn statement 22 Nov 1845, Polk Co., TN, in his mother Mary Ann Bodine Longley's Revolutionary Widow's Pension application. He applied for War of 1812 pension on 25 Apr 1871 at Ringgold, Catoosa Co., GA. He died on 23 Feb 1877 at Ringgold, Catoosa Co., GA, at age 85.

Joel served in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. He and his brother Joseph Longley enlisted for one year on 18 Nov 1813 under Capt. A. H. Douglass in Capt. J. B. Long's Co., 39th U.S. Infantry. The brothers fought in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend 27 Mar 1814, and were honorably discharged on 17 Nov 1814 at Fort Montgomery, MS Terr., according to Joel's sworn affidavit in his application for bounty land for his brother Joseph's only minor heir in June 1851 (Martha Jane Longley).

This was also attested to by her uncle John C. Longley, who received a land warrant for 160 acres. Joel gave Martha's date of birth as 22 Feb 1830 (the only record we have), her mother Priscilla's date of death as 1851, and Joseph's date of death as 25 Nov 1829. Elsewhere in the application file their younger brother John C. Longley gave the date of death as 25 Nov 1830, and so later did Joseph's oldest son Campbell Longley in a memoir.
