Richard Snowden Kirkland

of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina

Maryland ,Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina

RICHARD KIRKLAND, Sr., of Truro Parish, Prince William Co., VA, gave Gift Deeds to two sons, first EDWARD in 1714, and second, RICHARD SNOWDEN KIRKLAND in 1740 -- proving the son's middle name he seldom used but passed on to his own son, and suggesting his mother's maiden name.

"SNOWDEN KIRKLAND" was on the 1742 list of eligible voters in Prince William Co., VA, but sold his land in Virginia to follow his brother John to Granville Co., North Carolina, where both received land patents. Richard Snowden Kirkland had the distinction of being an original land owner in three colonies: Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

1730 Patent to Richard's son, Richard Snowden Kirkland, in Stafford County granted by Thomas Lord Fairfax, Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia

The Kirklands were some of the earliest arrivals (about 1750) in the part of Camden District, Old Craven Co., SC, which became Fairfield and Kershaw Cos. They included RICHARD SNOWDEN KIRKLAND, his wife MARY BROWN, their children, his brothers EDWARD, ROBERT, WILLIAM and their children; and their brother JOHN's son FRANCIS KIRKLAND.

Excerpt from History of Fairfield Co., SC, by Fitz Hugh McMasters

. . . Moses Kirkland owned 3,843 acres of land in ten grants, scattered over the colony, 1,000 acres being in Ninety-six District, 942 in Berkeley, 500 in Saxe-Gotha, others elsewhere and one of 100 acres being in Fairfield (Book 5, p. 417) on the Wateree Creek. Evidently he was an energetic, enterprising man. He became a leading "Regulator" . . .

The provincial government centered in Charleston was subject to the Royal government in London . . . so "sturdy and honest back settlers" set up "regulators" to deal with "the scum of the population of Europe, which the disbandment of the armies of France and England upon the Peace of Paris in 1763 had turned loose upon the frontiers of America." Nor that the Governor of the Province, hearing of the floggings, and hangings by the regulators, without court proceedings, should call upon the legislature to consider means of "suppressing the regulators." One might smile now at the affidavit of John Wood, a deputy, sent to serve processes on Moses Kirkland, Thomas Sumter and William Scott, that "he was overtaken by five armed men, who jerked him from his horse, disarmed him, tied his hands, then lifted him on his horse, and tied his feet under his horse's belly, and so taking to the house of one Frazer, beating him all the way as they went; there they had chained him to a post, and kept him until July 2, when he was removed to the house of one Barnaby Pope, and thence to the house of Thomas Woodward," etc. "He stated that Kirkland, Woodward, and Pope were the ringleaders, and swore they would not allow the service of any process of the Provost Marshal in that section." It is easy to understand why McGrady should say that the Provost Marshall should prefer to remain in London and have warrants served by a deputy, than come "to Carolina to serve writs, especially if in so doing he would have to encounter such characters as Moses Kirkland, Barnaby Pope, and Thomas Woodward."

. . . a Loyalist [in the Revolution], Moses Kirkland, of Camden District, one of the Regulators, and captain of a troop of rangers, with his whole troop . . . all signed an agreement to support the King. . . the property of Moses Kirkland was confiscated, and it is known that Kirkland fled the country and found protection on a British warship in Charleston Harbor. Grants of land recorded in the office of the Secretary of State show that Moses Kirkland had a total of 12,496 acres of land in different parts of South Carolina.

RICHARD SNOWDEN KIRKLAND and wife MARY may have lived with his brother John Kirkland for a period of time while he applied for and awaited the Granville Grant he received in Granville Co., NC, on 20 June 1748, to 300 acres of land "on Island Creek," where he had probably lived three years; the survey is found today in the NC State Archives, but not the grant.

He sold this 300 acres on 1 Sep 1749. Richard Snowden Kirkland had the distinction of being an original land owner in three colonies: Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

On 5 May 1752, the Precept date when Richard S. Kirkland went before the Colony's Council to ask for land for himself, wife, and 3 children from up north, 350 acres at foot of Wateree Creek, bordered on N. by Wateree River, SE by land laid out to RICHARD GREGGRIE and land laid out to JOSEPH GATES, and vacant, and the NW border is vacant.

The next step in the process was to await the official Survey, which took place on 27 July 1752, the Plat date when the land was surveyed and certified by the deputy surveyor.

Next, of course, the deputy surveyor notified his government, and on 11 May 1754 Richard's Grant date 350 acres was laid out for him "on the Wateree River, foot of Wateree Creek," "by George Hunter, His majesty's surveyor" under precept dated 5 May 1752 but survey not made until 27 Jul 1753. He sold the land.

Meanwhile, on 17 Aug 1753, Richard Kirkland of Craven Co. buys 567 acres of land on S. of land granted Samuel BACOT 6 Oct 1752 and certified 23 May 1749, bounded NE on said road, SE vacant and part on John TOD, Jr., and vacant.
