Snowden Family

Capt. RICHARD, Snowden, Sr., a Quaker born in Wales 1639, immigrated to the Port of Baltimore Co., MD, in 1658. He is believed to be the son of Richard Snowden. "A tradition exists that Maj. Richard Snowden, of Wales, who held a commission under Cromwell, was our immigrant." By Dec 1665 he settled in Anne Arundel Co., MD, where he bought and was granted huge tracts of land. In 1679 he claimed a tract of iron-ore land called the Iron Mine, on South River. The book ANNE ARUNDEL AND HOWARD FOUNDERS describes not only the ruins of "Birmingham" in Anne Arundel Co. but also a "Montpelier" across the Patuxent in Prince George's Co., MD. His son Richard Snowden, Jr., md. Mary Linthicum and their son Richard the younger was a large landowner, merchant, iron master, and proprietor of Patuxent Iron Works. By tradition, RICHARD the elder and 2nd wife ELIZABETH GROSSE's daughter MARY SNOWDEN md. RICHARD KIRKLAND, Sr., but no proof of her or the marriage has been found.
