He married Emma Susannah Richardson after 1814?; after he returned from War of 1812. He died on 28 Jun 1854 at Camden, Kershaw Co., SC, at age 68; Major JOHN CANTEY was born in this District in March, 1786. His father was JAMES CANTEY, a distinguished officer of the Revolution; and his mother was a WHITAKER, of that family so distinguished for their devotion to the cause of freedom in that memorable struggle. In 1814 he served the last campaign of the war, near Charleston, as Brigade Major. He was for a number of years a Director in the Branch Bank, and so continued to his death. On the 28th of June, at four o'clock A.M., he went to his rest, aged 69 years.

He began military service circa 1812 Brig. Major in War of 1812.

CROWELL, widow of the late Capt. HENRY CROWELL, died in Russell county, Ala., at the residence of her son?in?law, Mr. JOHN G ABERCUMBIE, May 16, 1877. She was buried at Fort Mitchell, Ala., by the side of her Husband, who died in 1840. She was born near Camden, S.C., April 10th 1792. She was sister to my mother and to the late Maj. John and Gen. JAMES W. CANTEY, of Camden, S.C. She moved to Washington county, GA., with her father, Maj. JAMES CANTEY, whilst a girl, and when about 17 years of age was united in marriage to Capt. CROWELL. Soon after their marriage they moved to the old Agency, on Flint River, Georgia, where his brother, Col. JOHN CROWELL, was Indian Agent ?? living there some 15 or 20 years. They moved to Ft. Mitchell, Ala., soon after the Indian war of 1836. That leaves two sons and five daughter, and many grand and great?grandchildren. Two sons and one daughter died previous to her death. The Rev. JOHN CROWELL of Alabama is her oldest son. S. E. WHITAKER."

He began military service in 1812 joined a corps of volunteer Cavalry under Capt. John Irwin, son of Gov. Irwin. His father objected to his joining the Army unless he could get an appointment on the northern frontier, then the scene of active operation. Failing in this he went with his company of volunteers into the Creek War, and was mustered into service at Fort Hawkins, GA, in 1813; was engaged in the battle of Ottosee and Talassee. After various promotions, he was appointed Brigadier General of the 5th Brigade in 1833.
