Wiggins-Baker Family

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: I can't even remember when or how I met Agness Wiggins Gunter several years ago via e-mail, when researching my ancestor JAMES WHITAKER of Fairfield Co., SC, but meeting her was a Godsend. She was knowledgeable about Whitaker's wife CATHERINE WIGGINS and her father Capt. JOHN WIGGINS. Since Agness published her excellent book in 2000, I keep it at my elbow for reference, but have not gone through and systematically entered all the many descendants and documents it contains. To obtain her hardbound, 770-page book with 70-page index, contact Agness by email. The last I knew, its price was $40. I highly recommend it.

Capt. JOHN WIGGINS was b. 1716 (in England?), son of an unknown Wiggins and Miss STUART; the date from age 70 in Bible record of death, or ca 1723 in VA according to DAR application; "an Englishman who came over and settled on the Roanoke River Martin Co. about 50 years before the Revolution." He died 15 Jul 1786 in Martin Co., NC.

In VA abt 1732 he married (1st) CATHERINE "CATY" BAKER, daughter of HENRY BAKER, III (b. abt 1684 in Surry, England) and ANGELICA BRAY (b. 1695-1696 in Isle of Wight Co., VA). 19 CATY apparently died bef 1748 when her husband JOHN sold land in Martin Co., NC, without a wife's signature, suggesting he was a widower.

JOHN and CATY eloped through a window, "great aunt CATY represented to be a large bouncing girl as most of the Baker girls were in olden times, eloped through that small window (what cannot love accomplish) with Mr. Wiggins. Her remains are resting side by side with Mr. Wiggins under a pear tree in Wiggins' old field of Wiggins Swamp," as described in a story written 1847 by Simmons Jones Baker, her great-nephew.

CATHERINE BAKER's father, HENRY BAKER, III, was a prosperous landowner who it is said in 1712, Buckland, VA, invited the Virginia surveyor William Byrd to dinner, convinced him that his 2200 acres of land in Virginia should be in NC, and Byrd resurveyed and changed the line (as mentioned in his diary). The land was in Chowan Co., NC, until Bertie was created out of it in 1722, from which in Halifax Co. was created in 1741, and Martin Co. in 1771. Henry Baker III d. 1 May 1739 in Chowan Co.

Henry Baker, III's father, HENRY BAKER, II, was b. abt 1660 in England (son of HENRY BAKER, I, and ELLA KENNEDY of England), and d. 28 Jul 1712 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. He md. MARY BLAKE, also English. They lived along the VA-NC line, and built a house which still stands, named for the place in England where he came from.

Capt. JOHN WIGGINS married (2nd), on 30 SEP 1766 in Bertie Co., NC, Mrs. ELIZABETH BEVINS, b. abt 1730, "John Wiggins, planter from Halifax Co. to Mrs. Bevins, a widow."

He was a very large land landlord, running from Enfield to Hamilton. In 1734, he received his first land grant, 200 acres north of Conoho Creek (NC Archives, Patent Book 5, p. 182). In Mar 1740, in Edgecombe Par., Bertie Co., NC, he received Land Grants for 450 acres and 320 acres north of Conoho Creek, also on Mill Creek and south of Roanoke River in Edgecombe Par. (which became Edgecombe Co. in 1741), adjoining Richard Wiggins; although the survey was made for John Wiggins, the warrant was given to William Baker.

He was on the 19 Feb 1744 Edgecombe Co. militia list; also qualified as a Justice of Peace, Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, appointed by the Governor. The court met quarterly for several days and he was noted as Justice three times bet 1744 and 1745.

In Halifax Co., NC, in 1761, he gave land to his sons Thomas and William (this land south of Roanoke River was successively in Bertie Co. 1722-41, Edgecombe Co. 1741-59, Halifax Co. 1759-74, and Martin Co. aft 1774).

In 1767, he gave the Gift Deed of a negro to daughter Catherine Wiggins Whitaker, Wit: James Whitaker; also gave his daughters Patty Hoskins and Winnifred Hoskins slaves and other goods.

He also, in 1767, sold land to sons Lemuel and Blake Baker Wiggins.

On 27 Nov 1771, in Halifax Co., NC, JOHN WIGGINS was exempted from paying taxes and doing public duties. Yet, in 1779, he was on the Martin Co., NC, tax list.

There was another John Wiggins in the area at the same time. Probably it was the other one listed as a Chief of the Tuscarora Indians on the Bertie Co. "Indian Woods Deed ~ The Tuscarora Indian Tribe of Indian Woods, Bertie County, had requested that Governor Tryon appoint 3 trustees to arrange for the sale of their land to pay the tribe's debts and finance their journey to New York to join the Six Nation. " The gentlemen Jones, Williams and Pugh had been appointed by Governor Tryon as trustees. (By this time, our Capt. JOHN WIGGINS' property was in Halifax Co., cut out of Edgecombe in Dec 1754, which was cut out of Bertie in 1741.)

"James Allen, JOHN WIGGINS, Billy George, Snifnose George, Bile Cain, Charles Cornelius, Thomas Blount, John Rogers, George Blount, Wineoak Charles, Bille Basket, Bile Owens, Lewis Tuffdick, Isaac Miller, Harry Samuel, Ridgers Thomas, Seniear, Thomas Howell, Bille Sockey, Bille Carelius, John Seniear, Thomas Baskett, John Cain, Billy Blount, Tom Jack, John Litewood, Billy Roberts, James Mitchell, Capt. Joe William Pugh, as chieftains of the Tuskarora Indians, "to Robert Jones Jr. attorney of NC province, & William Williams & Thomas Pugh gent. of same. 12 Jul 1766. 1800 pounds proclamation. 8000 acres on north side of Roanoke River, joining Deep Creek (Called Falling Run). William Wiggins b: bef 1733 in NC

Their daughter CATHERINE WIGGINS (b. ca 1732) is my ancestor; she married JAMES WHITAKER and made their home in Fairfield Dist., SC, where their daughter MARY "POLLY" WHITAKER married my gr-gr-gr-grandfather ABNER ROSS.

Her sister, WINIFRED WIGGINS (b. ca 1735) of Edenton, NC, is rather famous for her role in the Revolutionary War, in which she was very active and a leader in the Edenton Tea Party (Chowan Co., NC); her descendants were very involved in early days of the DAR. Her residence at Edenton, still stands 5 miles north of town. She married Richard Hoskins 1763 in NC; they went down the Roanoke River in an open boat on their wedding day; her wedding dress was spun from flax grown on her father's farm in Halifax Co. This couple had 8 sons and 8 daughters. She managed the entire farming interest (the farm called
"Paradise") with prudence and profit while her husband was absent as a fearless and zealous Patriot during the Revolution.

When WINIFRED d. 07 OCT 1807 in Edenton, Chowan Co., NC, she was described as "a very old and respectable inhabitant of the county." 1 Given a slave by father John Wiggins, she left a will dated 20 SEP 1807 Chowan Co., NC, which named her granddaughter Winnefred Bond, and six youngest children: Martha, Sarah, Winnefred, Elizabeth, Fanny, Lemuel. (Edenton NC Newspaper, 8 Oct 1807; The Deeds of Halifax County, North Carolina, 1774-1787, by Stephen E. Bradley, Jr., 1994, in Book 9, p. 528; Chowan Co., NC, Will Book B, p. 182; Family Group Sheet of Agness Wiggins Gunter, Apex, NC; Hathaway's NC Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 3, p. 116).
