1.7.2 John W. Wilks III married Lydia Strong at Maury Co., TN. He was born circa 1798? at VA. He immigrated before 1816 to Hardin Co., KY. He died before Dec 1836 at Yalobusha Co., MS.

1.7.3 Newman Wilks was born circa 1800 at SC. He married Elizabeth Carr, daughter of Robert Eli Carr and Elizabeth Mattox, on 21 Oct 1830 at Lauderdale Co., AL. He witnessed the inventory and appraisal of his brother Philip's estate. The sale on 27 Feb 1832 by his father John Wilks, administrator, had buyers Charles Walton, Newman Wilks, Sterling Phillips, Jacob Rhodes, Wm. Stowe, Conrad Newman with Philip Wilks on 13 Aug 1831 at Lauderdale Co., AL. He witnessed his father John, as administrator of son Philip's estate, signed (his mark) on deed conveying half of land Philip bought with brother Newman, pursuant to Act of 13th General Assembly of Alabama meeting in Tuscaloosa, approved 19 Jan 1832 with Philip Wilks and John Wilks Jr. on 26 Jun 1832 at Lauderdale Co., AL.

Newman and Betsy sold a 40-acre tract of land for $300 to his father John Wilks, the S. 1/2 of W. 1/2 of N.E. 1/4 of Section 8, Twp. 2, Range 11 W on 4 Nov 1834 at Lauderdale Co., AL. They were enumerated on the census of 1850 north of the River, Yalobusha Co., MS.

Newman died before 8 Mar 1859 at Yalobusha Co., MS. William M. Weatherly, J. R. Wilks, Dempsey Diltz, and Johnson Buntin made bond of $15,000 as collectors, etc., of estate of Newman Wilks, late of said county of Yalobusha on 8 Mar 1859 at Yalobusha Co., MS.

A. S. Brown [Newman's brother-in-law] made $5000 bond as guardian of Samuel Wilks, a minor of Yalobusha Co., Samuel Brown [probably A.S.] made bond of $5000 as guardian to Charley Wilks, and William M. Weatherly made bond of $5000 as guardian to Lucinda Wilks, a minor of said county on 10 Nov 1859 at Yalobusha Co., MS. Weatherly was in Tallahatchie Co. by 1860.

MOST OF the Newman Wilks's family and some of Philip's children, General Jackson Wilks, Mary Wilks Brown, and Anna Wilks Mattocks died of tuberculosis in Yalobusha Co., MS, a humid, damp place. The Court appointed guardians for the remaining children and those who survived to do so moved to Missouri.

1.7.4 Philip Wilks was born circa 1807? at SC. He married Alcie Marrs, daughter of John A. Marrs and Nancy J. Stone, on 13 May 1824 at Lauderdale Co., AL. He and Alcie Marrs appeared on the census of 1830 at Lauderdale Co., AL. He was murdered in Aug 1831 at Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL. The inventory and appraisal of his estate by Samuel Hammell, John Brown, John Wommack listed 2 cows & calves, 2 heifers, 18 hogs, one 6 yr. old horse, 2 yr. old bay colt, 1 yr. old sorrel coltd, 1 framed loom, 1 side saddle and 1 man's saddle, 1 cherry bureau, and assorted household and farm implements. The sale on 27 Feb 1832 by his father John Wilks, administrator, had buyers Charles Walton, Newman Wilks, Sterling Phillips, Jacob Rhodes, Wm. 1.7.4.1 John Washington Wilks (Uncle Wash) was also known as John "The Englishman" Wilks because of his attire, per grandson Edd Fry as told to Gaylon Fry, Apr 2002. He was born between 1825 and 1826 at Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL. He married Nancy C. Hennigan, daughter of Robert H. Hennigan and Martha "Patsy" Crowell, between 1 Jun 1850 and 11 Sep 1850 at MS. Nancy was said by a descendant to be a full-blood Indian.

 He and Benjamin Carroll Wilks appeared on the census of 11 Sep 1850 at Pontotoc Co., MS. He and Benjamin Carroll Wilks immigrated circa 1852 to TX. He and Benjamin Carroll Wilks lived in Nov 1854 at Navarro Co., TX. He and Nancy C. Hennigan appeared on the census of 1860 at Hill Co., TX. He and Nancy C. Hennigan lived between 1865 and 1905? at Denton Co., TX. He and Nancy C. Hennigan appeared on the census of 1870 at Denton Co., TX. He lived in 1870 at Denton Co., TX. He died between 1870 and 1880 at Denton Co., TX.

iv. Washington Virginia "Ginny" WILKS was born 16 APR 1868 in Denton Co., TX, and died 21 JUN 1959 in Dickens Co., TX. She md. Alexander A. FRY 11 DEC 1884 in Denton, TX, son of Lewis M. FRY and Rebecca WESTMORELAND. He was born 14 APR 1849 in Stokes Co., NC, and died 06 SEP 1929 in Spur, Dickens Co., TX.

 

 

1.7.4.2 Benjamin Carroll Wilks was born on 12 Aug 1827 at Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL. He and John Washington Wilks appeared on the census of 11 Sep 1850 at Pontotoc Co., MS. He and John Washington Wilks immigrated circa 1852 to TX. He and John Washington Wilks lived in Nov 1854 at Navarro Co., TX. He married Martha Harriet Young, daughter of Dr. Henry Young and Mary "Polly" Whitesides, in 1856 at Hill Co., TX. He died on 15 Jan 1919 at Chalk Mtn., Bosque Co., TX, at age 91. They were my great-grandparents. He enlisted as a Private, 26 Aug 1861 in Peoria, Hill Co., TX, in Hood's Texas Brigade, Confederate Army, with his brothers-in-law Cincinnatus Ney Brooks and Harvey W. Young as officers, Henry Young as a Private, and served throughout the Civil War; said he "walked all the way there and walked all the way back."
