In the summer of 1968, our oldest
daughter, Karen and a visiting first cousin, Constance, accompanied
their grandfather, Alfred Hand to a neighboring town to visit
a distant cousin in a nursing home. This visit led to further
comments and reminisces around our dining room table. Needless
to say, I was hooked! I had always had a love of history so this
family history stuff ought to be fun. How was I to know that I’d
still be at this all consuming hobby almost 40 years later.
My husband, Glenn knew very little
about his ancestors. When he was growing up, he thought that his
Hand family was the only one in the world. After interviewing
his father, Alfred and Alfred’s sister, Bernice, I discovered
their knowledge of the Hand family was very limited. Their father,
William Henry had been murdered in 1910. Alfred and Bernice had
spent little time with that side of the family. So, armed with
a 3 hole binder with lined paper and a set of colored dividers
I set forth into unknown territory.
Genealogical sources were not available
in our area and I certainly didn’t know what I was doing.
I did some research in court houses and convinced a Hand cousin,
living in San Antonio, to go to the public library and look at
the microfilmed census records. So gathering the data was a slow
process. At least the county I needed to focus on at that time
was just an hour’s drive from Victoria.
After many years of writing letters
and spending time in libraries, I had put together a fair bit
of information. Since the advent of the computer and the internet,
genealogy is much easier but there is information out there that
could led us down the wrong path. Since the days of one binder
with dividers, I now have a room with 2 5 drawer filing cabinets
plus the piles of paper stacked on most flat surfaces and a Family
Tree Maker program with over 4,000 names.
In retrospect I think two most important
pieces of data I received was Samuel Hand’s Revolutionary
War Pension Application and the personal information that Moses
Henry Hand, son of Aaron Hand, wrote in 1863. You have received
both. I have been fortunate to locate most of Samuel and Mary’s
children and a fair amount of data on them. I have also used some
of Moses Henry Hand’s info and proved it correct.
Presently the problem is proving
the rest of the children of Uriah Hand and Ascenath Brewer [parents
of Samuel, Aaron and Hannah]. Other Hand researchers have placed
a Margaret , a Jonathan who was in the same South Carolina militia
unit as Samuel. Does this make him a brother? And a Uriah who
was b. about 1758, volunteered in Lincoln Co. NC [this is the
county right above the area in South Carolina where Samuel lived]
during the Rev. War. He files for Rev War pension in Spencer Co.
KY. Again, does this make him a brother?
In regard to Uriah’s ancestors
the waters gets pretty murky.
In 1981 Carol Clark Johnson published
a book called Hand, Sisson and Scott, more Yeoman Ancestors.
[This book may be viewed at the Family History Center, Salt Lake,
Utah and is also on microfilm at the Center.]
Ms. Johnson has assigned the following
ancestors to Uriah Hand:

In her book Ms. Johnson uses terms
such as "similar family names, dates of birth, and a common
residence in Essex County seems reason enough to believe that
Uriah and Samuel are sons of Jonathan, lacking evidence to the
contrary" and then the phase "would be to be."
We all need to get busy and find
the proofs back to John Hand.
A group that calls themselves "Handcousins"
organized Sep 5, 1999, and have 350 members. In order to view
