	Dale enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March 1942 (four mos. after Pearl Harbor). He was assigned to the Submarine service at San Diego, CA, and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His Victory medal

Dale and his mother, Erie Catharine Taylor Wilks	Top: He lived with his sister and brother-in-law at Burnet, Reta and Charlie Ross, and worked for Charlie in road construction, here preparing the Chisos Basin in now Big Bend National Park for addition of a Lodge, parking, and other services. Below: This was Dale's Plymouth car he drove both before and several years after World War II (license plate reads 1941). It didn't have a heater and I remember being cold all the way home with them to Brownwood after one visit to Grandmother's.

May 13, 1943, Burnet, Texas, at Reta and Charlie's house, precious gasoline ration coupons were used for the family to gather from Dublin, Eagle Pass, Galveston and Wharton to be with Dale on his furlough
