at Bedford Co., VA. He was a witness deeded 76 acres to Garret
Newman, and 81 acres to Adam Newman, for 100 pounds Virginia
currency; at same time Henry Newman was deeded 220 acres by Edmond
Franklin with Conrad Newman and Anna Margaretta Brubeck in 1797
at Bedford Co., VA (Bedford County, Virginia, Deeds). He appeared
on the census of 1810 at Bedford Co., VA.
1.1.1.1.1.9 Garrett7 Newman was
also known as John Gerhardt Newman. He was born in Jan 1773 at
Beckford Par., Shenandoah Co., VA. He married Elizabeth Dixon,
daughter of John Dixon and Mary Arthur, on 29 Oct 1791 at Bedford
Co., VA.
Garrett Newman, son of Conrad and
Anna grew up and settled in this area. In 1791, he married Elizabeth
Dixon, daughter of John Dixon, their child John Clark Newman;
born in 1799 married Elizabeth had at least eight children who
mostly grew up and settled in this area.
Their son Elias Newman born 1828
was married three times, his second wife was an Indian, and he
had children by the first two wives, some of who settled in the
area, and some descendants are now living in Danville. One of
Elias' sons, Montezuma Elias Newman was married to Bettie Durham
and they were parents of about seven children. He was killed
by lightning while taking refuge from a storm, in a tobacco barn
with some of the other neighbors and family members. Some of
the others were shocked, and horses were killed in the side shed.
They were living on land between
Stone road and Goose Creek, and Monsie is buried at the top of
the hill on what is known as the Old Durham house, which was
ordered from Sears and Roebuck, still stands, in Goose Creek
bottom.
One of John Clark Newman's and
Elizabeth's sons, Wiley Clark Newman born in 1834, nicknamed
"Boogie", married Ann Mildred Howell, daughter of Spicer
Howell Sr. and Naomi Leftwich. Boogie rented farms all his life
down around Leesville and Lynch Station, and moved his family,
over to the North side of Bedford at one time.
Their oldest son was William Martin
Newman born in 1868, known as "Willie" to family and
friends. His first wife Lucy Wright died after giving birth to
two living sons. Thurman and Albert Penn. Then he married Daisy
Caleb Howell, daughter of James Ed Howell, niece of Ann Mildred,
and granddaughter of Spicer Howell, Sr. and Naomi. And Daisy
became mother of two sons, James Newman, who married a local
girl and moved to Vinton area.
And Richard Edward "Chris"
Newman who with his wife Lucy, still lives on the home place,
which is built on Tingsley property which ajoined Spicer Howell
land. Many of the Newman ancestors are buried in family cemeteries
either where Newman's or Howell's have lived.

Adam Newman in letter from nephew Benjamin Wilks to nephew Henry
Wilks in Bedford Co., VA, "PS. You can inform Uncle Adam
Newman and family that Ben Creasy has bought land in a bout a
mile of me and has moved to his place. He got there yesterday.
They are all well. Betty Newman Uncle's daughter is at our house
at preasant and request to be remembered to all our connections
and Adam and family Garret family Ambous Creasy family as well
but there has been a great deal of sickness among them"

Jr. sold 80 acres to Saml. Brumley for $230, the N. 1/2 of N.W.
1/4 of Section 29, Twp. 2, Range 13 W, land deeded to Samuel

was also known as Johann Conrad Newman Jr.. He was born circa
1784 at VA.
He began military service on 13
Feb 1814 at TN Pvt. in War of 1812, listed as Coonrod Newman,
pay $8 per month, Capt. John McKamy's Co., 5th Regt., E. Tennessee
Drafted Military (aka East Tennessee Militia, Col. Edwin E. Booth's
Regt.), sent to Mobile to protect against Indian and/or British
offensive, and probably stationed at Ft. Strother. The Regt.
organized at Knoxville marched to Lookout Mtn., Ft. Strother,
and Mobile, and most were dismissed at Mobile at end of war.
He ended military service on 12 May 1815 at TN. He married Keziah
Reynolds, daughter of Jethro Reynolds and Keziah Fuller, on 18
Dec 1817 at Roane Co., TN. He appeared on the census of 1820
at Smith Co., TN. He and Keziah Reynolds appeared on the census
of 1830 at Lauderdale Co., AL. He lived circa Aug 1831 at Lauderdale
Co., AL. He was a witness inventory and appraisal of estate by
Samuel Hammell, John Brown, John Wommack listed 2 cows &
calves, 2 heifers, 18 hogs, one 6 yr. old horse, 2 yr. old bay
colt, 1 yr. old sorrel coltd, 1 framed loom, 1 side saddle and
1 man's saddle, 1 cherry bureau, and assorted household and farm
implements. The sale on 27 Feb 1832 by his father John Wilks,
administrator, had buyers Charles Walton, Newman Wilks, Sterling
Phillips, Jacob Rhodes, Wm. Stowe, Conrad Newman with Philip
Wilks on 13 Aug 1831 at Lauderdale Co., AL (Lauderdale County,
Alabama, Wills). He died in Sep 1835 at Kingston, Roane Co.,
