WILKS-Wilkes MATERNAL LINES

~ Marrs Family ~

Alcie Marrs, Wife of Philip Wilks

Daughter of John A. Marrs & Nancy J. Stone

Ahnentafel, Generation No. 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Alcie MARRS was born ABT 1807 in TN. She was the daughter of 2. John A. MARRS and 3. Nancy J. STONE. She married Philip WILKS on 13 MAY 1824 in Lauderdale Co., AL, son of John WILKS Jr. and Barbary NEWMAN. He was born ABT 1805 in SC, and died BEF AUG 1831 in Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL. In the 1830 census of Lauderdale Co., they were enumerated with age 20-30, wife 20-30, two males and two females under age 5.

Philip was set upon, robbed, and murdered in Aug 1831 returning home from Florence (seat of Lauderdale Co.) where he had gone to a slave auction which turned out to be the following week. His grave is unmarked but was no doubt nearby in the Denman Ceme. where some of their relatives were buried (now neglected on private land and hard to access).

On 13 Aug 1831, an inventory and appraisal of his estate by Samuel Hammell, John Brown, John Wommack listed 2 cows & calves, 2 heifers, 18 hogs, one 6 yr. old horse, 2 yr. old bay colt, 1 yr. old sorrel colt, 1 framed loom, 1 side saddle and 1 man's saddle, 1 cherry bureau, and assorted household and farm implements. The sale on 27 Feb 1832 by his father John Wilks, administrator, had buyers Charles Walton, Newman Wilks, Sterling Phillips, Jacob Rhodes, Wm. Stowe, Conrad Newman (Lauderdale Co. Wills, Book 5, pp. 382-384, & Book 6, pp.434, 435).

On 26 Jun 1832, his father John as administrator of son Philip's estate, signed (his mark) on a deed conveying half of land Philip bought with brother Newman, pursuant to Act of 13th General Assembly of Alabama meeting in Tuscaloosa, approved 19 Jan 1832 (Lauderdale Co. Deeds, Book 5, pp. 425-426; and Acts of 13th Session of General Assembly of AL published 1832, p. 97).

Alcie married 2nd James RHODES 06 AUG 1833 in Lauderdale Co., AL, a neighbor, son of Jonathan RODES, whose land adjoined John Wilks, both original federal grants. James was born ABT 1810.

John WILKS and wife Barbary NEWMAN sold their land in Lauderdale Co. on 22 OCT 1835 Lauderdale Co. and moved along the Natchez Trace to the Chickasaw Purchase in Yalobusha Co., MS, they sold their land to Jonathan RODES for $500 the S. 1/2 of W. 1/2 of N.E. 1/4 of Section 8, Twp. 2, Range 11 W., and S. 1/2 of E. 1/2 of same Section. Recorded 26 Mar 1836. They settled in Yalobusha Co., MS.

Alcie and James RODES also moved to Mississippi, leaving the Trace a little sooner, in Chickasaw Co., MS.

Unfortunately the Chickasaw Co. Court House records were burnt by Yankee soldiers, who caught up to locals attempting to take the records to safety by wagon, and burning them. Jacob RHODES, who married Philip Wilks's sister, was probably James's brother.

James RODES/RHODES and Alcie were enumerated in the 1850 census, as follows:

James Rhodes 35 farmer $2500 SC, Alsie RHODES 43 TN, Mariah 16 AL, James 12 AL, Hazeah 9 AL, Martha 4 MS, William 1 MS.

They have not been found in the 1860 or 1870 census; so without county deed and other records, we can't know where or when they died or moved away before the War. Some of their children moved to Stephenville, Erath Co., TX.

Children of Alcie MARRS and Philip WILKS were:

+ 2 i. John Washington WILKS was born BET 1825 AND 1826 in Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL, and died 20 MAR 1878 in Denton, Denton Co., TX.

+ 3 ii. Benjamin Carroll WILKS was born 12 AUG 1827 in Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL, and died 15 JAN 1919 in Chalk Mtn., Somervell Co., TX.

4 iii. Minerva WILKS was born 1829 in Lauderdale Co., AL. She married Jacob RODES 1838 in Lauderdale Co., AL. He was born ABT 1805.

5 iv. Nancy L. "Nan" WILKS was born BET 1831 AND 1832 in Lauderdale Co., AL. She married Mr. BECK. He was born ABT 1830.

Children of Alcie MARRS and James RODES were:

iv. Mariah RODES was born ca 1834 in Lauderdale Co., AL.

v. James RODES was born ca 1838 in Lauderdale Co., AL.

vi. Hazeah RODES was born ca 1841 AL.

vii. Martha "Mattie" RODES was born ca 1846 MS.

viii. William RODES was born ca 1849? MS.

The two half-sisters, Nancy L. WILKS and Martha "Mattie" RHODES, moved to Texas. Nancy married a Beck and they had no children. She was a widow when she came to live with her sister Mattie. She was medium size, had black hair, dark brown eyes, and dark skin. Mattie had sandy hair and blue eyes like her father Philip's people. Mattie married Dick Long who served Erath Co., TX, as both sheriff and coounty clerk, according to Erie Catherine Taylor Wilks. They had ten children. He was one of F. S. Taylor's best friends. Erie said they put in a hotel in Stephenville, Erath Co., and ran it until she died.

When Mattie was 14, about 1860, her older sister Mariah sat down in front of the fireplace to fill a lamp with oil. It exploded, and two of them died. Aunt Matt had scars all over her face, neck, and arms.

John Washington WILKS (called "Uncle Wash") and Benjamin C. WILKS were enumerated in the 11 Sep 1850 census of Pontotoc Co., MS, just north of Chickasaw Co., just north of Chickasaw Co., in hh 289-289 as John W. WILKES 23 farmer $700 AL, wife Nancy 18 AL, Benjamin 22 farmer AL. Nextdoor were Andrew M. Rhoades 24 blacksmith AL, Mary 18 AL, M. H. Johnson 22 blacksmith AL. (Andrew M. Rhodes may have been their stepbrother.)

Between 1851-1852 when Benjamin was 24, he and John left Mississippi from Shannon's Station, probably in the portion of Pontotoc Co. which became Lee Co., MS, in 1866). They worked first in East Texas as overseers, but no record has been found.

In Nov 1854, John W. and Benjamin WILKS bought land together in Navarro Co., TX (from which Ellis and Hill Cos. were cut). Navarro Co. is where Benjamin met his future wife, Martha Harriet YOUNG, and where her father Dr. HENRY YOUNG's estate was administered.

In 1860 John WILKS and his wife Nancy HENNIGAN were in Hill Co., TX, as John W. 35 AL, Nancy 28 AL, Robert 4 TX, Martha 2 TX.

In 1870 they were in Denton Co., TX, in hh 87-87 as John W. Wilks 45 farmer $1850-$550 (last line on p.); Nancy 30 keeping house AL, James R. 14 works on farm TX, Martha A. 13 attending school TX, Idaho 4, Washington N. 1 TX; p. 127? (not numbered).
The census-taker got his pages mixed up, so initially it looked like John W. Wilks was in same house as: John H. Cleveland 11 MO works on farm (top of next page), but that's part of hh 72.

They lived in Denton from abt 1865 until his death 20 Mar 1878. He was buried in the Oddfellows Ceme. in Denton. His widow was head of her household in the 1880 census as Nancy C. Wilks 47 widow AL, Robert 17 TX, Idaho 14 TX, Washington Virginia 11 TX.

In 1900 she was in her daughter's household in Denton Co. Abt 1905 she went to live with another child in Antelope, Jack Co., TX, where she died in 1914. She was buried in the Antelope Ceme., Jack Co.

On 19 Jun 1900, Richard T. Long, wife Mattie (RODES), and her sister Nannie (WILKS) BECK were enumerated of Alexander, Erath Co., TX: in hh 195-196 as Richard T. Long head b. Mar 1845 age 55 md. 33 yrs. TN-Ireland-TN, Mattie wife b. Oct 1846 age 53 md. 33 yrs. 10 children borne 6 living MS-AL-AL farmer, Leanna daughter b. May 1876 age 24 TX-TN-MS, Ora D. daughter b. Apr 1886 age 14 TX-TN-MS; Nannie Beck sister-in-law b. Feb 1833 age 66 children borne 0 AL-NC-AL; p. 144A.
