 Rosa Jewel Taylor was a graduate of Sul Ross University at Alpine and devoted her life to teaching elementary school in Texas districts.

 F. S. Taylor at his home in Burnet, abt 1930 ~in the 400 block of East Jackson St., between the Square and the railroad. He ran a grocery store on the Square in Burnet.

 His daughter Erie's son Vane and daughter Reta stayed with him on week nights to attend Burnet High School, graduating 1929 and 1930.

She was the daughter of Robert KIRKLEY. She was born 07 OCT 1866 in Sumter, Sumter Co., SC, and died 03 DEC 1946 in Mahl, Nacogdoches Co., TX. She married 1st Frances Marion "Frank" QUINE 10 NOV 1880 in Falls Co., TX, son of John QUINE and Sarah Ann WOODWARD. He was born 01 NOV 1849 in Vicksburg, Warren Co., MS, and died 02 JAN 1912 in Mahl, Nacogdoches Co., TX. She married 2nd R. L. HUNT 29 SEP 1912 in Nacogdoches Co., TX.

Mary was 3 years old in her parents' home in the 1870 census of Sumter, Sumter Co., SC.

In 1880 she and her parents and siblings were in Falls Co., TX.

 Grandpa Taylor died Dec 1936. This is Granny Taylor (Mary) as I remember her from my childhood. My mother, Reta, was very fond of her, the only grandmother she ever knew, and I remember her tears when Granny left to live with her children in the Lufkin, Nacogdoches area.

She died on 2 Sep 1970 at Bandon, OR, at age 91. She was buried circa 5 Sep 1970 at DeLeon, TX.

(1) Alpha5 Moore was born on 22 Aug 1903 at DeLeon, TX. She married Robert A. "Bob" Campbell circa 1938? Both school teachers, they went on vacation to OR, fell in love with it, and decided to move there to help establish a Church of Christ, which she was faithful to attend all of her life. An only child, when Alpha's mother died in 1970, her husband Bob too had a heart attack and died, so she was unable to accompany her mother's body to Texas for burial. Alpha died on 8 Sep 1996 at Bandon, Coos Co., OR, at age 93. It was my privilege to visit her in Oregon several times, and to take my mother there as well.

i) Erie Catharine4 Taylor was born on 29 Mar 1881 at near, Cincinnati, AR. She married William Wesley Whiteside Wilks, son of Benjamin Carroll Wilks and Martha Harriet Young, on 28 Aug 1905 at court house, Glen Rose, Somervell Co., TX. She witnessed the death of Generrah "Jennie" Taylor on 15 Feb 1910 at Loraine, Michel Co., TX. She and Leonard Franklin Tippie Frank wrote a letter to his sister-in-law Erie Taylor Wilks, nine days after his wife's death on 24 Feb 1910 at Loraine?, TX.

She and William Wesley Whiteside Wilks were enumerated on the census of 1920 at Duffau Pct., Erath Co., TX. They moved circa 1927 to Burnet Co., TX. There they were enumerated on the census of 1 Jun 1930 at Pct. 1, Burnet-Lampasas Rd., Burnet Co., TX. In Dec 1938 they moved to Dublin, Erath Co., TX. She died of a cerebral hemorhage on 30 Aug 1951 at Gorman, Eastland Co., TX, at age 70.

(1) Karl Glyn5 Wilks was born on 10 Jul 1906 at Chalk Mtn., Somervell Co., TX. He married Cora Mae Chandler on 14 Feb 1926 at Loop, Gaines Co., TX. He lived between 1944 and 1959 at Breckenridge, TX. He died on 8 Sep 1991 at McGregor, McLennan Co., TX, at age 85.

(2) Marl Vane5 Wilks was born on 19 Jun 1909 at Chalk Mtn., Somervell Co., TX. He married Loma Irene Smith, daughter of Charles Benton Smith and Jessie Iona Evans, in Jun 1931 at Burnet, Burnet Co., TX. They had three daughters and one son, and moved to Galveston, TX. They were divorced in Aug 1946 at Dallas, Dallas Co., TX. German unconditional surrender ended World War II in Europe, known as V-E Day, 8 May 1945 at Rheims, France. Unconditional Japanese surrender aboard ship in the Pacific ended World War II on 15 Aug 1945. He was went to Japan as a civil engineer, U.S. govt. employee. When his parents said good-bye to him on their farm near Dublin, he drove away, and his 62 y.o. father dropped dead of a heart attack. The family was able to contact Vane before he left the country and he returned for the funeral in Nov 1946 at Japan. He married Yasuko A. Akatsuka on 25 Nov 1953 at Yokohama, Japan. they had one daughter and one son. He worked in Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Pakistan, and he and his wife and children came to the United States and opened a jewelry store. He died on 17 Nov 1980 at Arlington, Tarrant Co., TX, at age 71.

(3) Reta Vird5 Wilks was born on 5 Jul 1911 at Chalk Mtn., Somervell Co., TX. She was educated in May 1930 at Burnet, TX. She married Charlie Ross, son of William Alfred Ross and Mary Ann "Candy" Green, on 6 Oct 1931. After Charlie's death on 2 Oct 1977, Reta remarried on 1 Jan 1979 to Asa Howell, a widower. He died four years later. Reta died 4 Feb 1994 in Grand Prairie, Dallas Co., TX.

(4) Dale Taylor5 Wilks was born on 18 Apr 1914 at Danville, AR. He was educated in May 1935 at Burnet, TX. He married Loma Irene Smith (2427), daughter of Charles Benton Smith and Jessie Iona Evans, in Sep 1946 at Brown Co., TX. He died on 21 Feb 1992 at Colorado Springs, CO, at age 77. He began military service on 3 Mar 1942 at Houston, TX, enlisted in the Navy, reported to duty in Houston on 18 Mar; he wrote a card to his sister Myrl who wrote to their ‘folks’ on 20 Mar 1942, “We had a card from Dale Wednesday saying he was to leave Houston that day but didn’t know where yet. He said he’d write again soon. I’m glad you got to be with him some before he left. I was in hopes some of you would come with him, when he came over to see Vane and us. I was so glad he could come by to see us all for a while before going. I hope you won’t worry about him too much, mama. He seemed well satisfied in the part he’s to take in the service. I’m so proud of him. I know Jenkins is thrilled. I believe he'll go a long way and that we will all be proud to say we’ve a brother or son in the Navy.”

 His sister Myrl Wilks McLean wrote this letter on 27 Nov 1942 to their ‘folks’.…

"Dale says he is much happier now than when he first went into the Navy. I hope Kirby will be the same. way ... Mama & Papa, whatever they decide about them (sic. Dale, Kirby, Voy) remember that God looks after his own children so I believe our three boys will be all right in every way. Look how lucky Dale has been, of course, he works hard and doesn’t get to do as he pleases all time but he hasn’t been to sea and hasn’t had to fight. That’s some proof that Christian boys are looked after by our Father.”

His mailing address and rank were Dale T. Wilks, F3C, Sub Repair Unit M2, San Diego, CA on 15 Dec 1942. He came home on two weeks leave, his only visit home, in May 1943. His mailing address and rank were Dale T. Wilks, MM2/C, Sub. Div. 4.1, % of Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, CA on 15 Nov 1944. His address was Dale T. Wilks, MM2/C, USNR, Groupe #5, Sub Base – Navy 1504, % Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, CA, in a letter to his sister Myrl, on 15 Feb 1945:

 “I started working nights on Monday. Work from 4 P.M. to midnight. I don’t mind working that shift when I don’t have to work too long hours. It is hard for me to get in the habit of sleeping the first part of the night when I go back on days. Have you heard from Kirby any more? I haven’t heard from him since January 15. I am glad he was able to talk to you. Also glad papa and mama got to visit him. I got a letter from his girl a few days ago. From what she said, it looks like we are to have another sister-in-law. Anyway I am glad they didn’t get married before he went overseas.”

He ended his military service in Dec 1945 at Camp Wallace, TX.

(5) Myrl Jean5 Wilks was born at Chalk Mtn., Somervell Co., TX. She was educated in 1936? at Lampasas, TX. She married Blake Charles McLean, son of Alonzo David "Lon or AD" McLean and Lossie Myrtle Perry, on 7 Aug 1937 at Lampasas, Lampasas Co., TX. She and Blake Charles McLean lived in Apr 1941 at El Campo, TX, lived in Jun 1941 at Wharton, TX, and moved to Houston in the 1950s. Myrl received a birthday card signed, "Papa, Mama, and Voy" in Nov 1946. Blake died in 1994.

(6) Gwyn Voy5 Wilks also went by the name of Voy Wilks. He was born on 17 Dec 1920 at Hadley, Donley Co., TX. He was educated in May 1939 at Dublin, Erath Co., TX. He and Myrtle Irene Fenter met on Easter Sunday on 9 Apr 1944. He and Erie Catharine Taylor began military service on 10 Nov 1944 at Dallas, TX, as a conscientious objector, with four years of high school, a general farmer residing in Erath Co., TX. His mother wrote her daughter Myrl on 25 Nov 1944 hoping he would get a 36-hour leave. He served in the Asiatic Pacific theater of Operations for 14 months in Philippine Islands on Luzon in the Manila area. He married Myrtle Irene Fenter, daughter of Charles C. Fenter and Annie Celestial Stephens, on 3 Jun 1945. He wrote a letter to his sister Myrl & Blake McLean from aboard ship to Philippines. His address was Pvt. G. V. Wilks, 38637609, 558 Cas. Co., APO 11762, % of P.M., San Francisco, Calif. (Now in possession of Barbara McLean Carter on 26 Jul 1945).

He wrote a letter to his aunt Jewel Taylor from Pvt. G.V. Wilks, 417th Repl., APO 291, % of PM, San Francisco, Calif. – Luzon, PI. awaiting assignment on 21 Aug 1945. His sister Myrl received a birthday card signed, "Papa, Mama, and Voy" in Nov 1946. He ended military service on 18 Nov 1946 at Fort Sam Houston, TX. Afterwards, he ran a laundry at Carbon, TX. He and his siblings built a little house in 1951 at Carbon next to his for their mother Erie Taylor Wilks -- her first house with a bathroom, hot/cold running water and a bathtub. Myrtle died in 2003. He married 2nd Susie Edmond on 15 Aug 2004 at Assembly of Yahweh, Romney, Eastland Co., TX. Voy died on 14 Mar 2010 at Abilene, TX, at age 89.

(7) Kirby Kimmel5 Wilks was born at near Loop, Gaines Co., TX. He was educated between 1927 and 1938 at Burnet Co., TX. He began military service on 14 Nov 1942 at Abilene, TX, drafted into the Army, fresh out of high school, WW II, farmer, resident of Erath Co.; ht. 5'9" wt. 146; enlistment for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law. Trained in Mississippi and Colorado as a mountaineer, served as a medic across Italy to join up with Patton's army and liberated the first POW camp where he saw emaciated men he had trained with. He married Rita Merle Stroud on 25 Sep 1948 at Dublin, TX. He married Mrs. Mary Joyce Schoen Ward on 10 Jun 1962 at Austin, Travis Co., TX.

 

j) Rosa Jewel4 Taylor was educated at Alpine, TX. She was born on 14 Apr 1891 at Carlton, Hamilton Co., TX. She and Ferdinando San Francisco Taylor appeared on the census of 20 Jan 1920 at Hico, Hamilton Co., TX. She was a witness mentioned in a letter from his uncle F. S. Taylor to daughter Jewel with William Tarlton Taylor (56736) and Emma Walter on 22 Jan 1928 at Burnet, TX. She lived in Dec 1936 at Longview, TX. She died on 21 Nov 1969 at Burnet, Burnet Co., TX, at age 78.

 

k) Charles Jenkins4 Taylor was born on 28 May 1894 at Carlton, Hamilton Co., TX. He began military service in 1916 at TX in Texas National Guard during the Pancho Villa Revolution. He began military service on 24 Apr 1917 served in U.S. Navy, World War I, his rank was Chief Water Tender. He went through basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and served on the U.S.S. Annapolis to Havana, Cuba, and Tampico Bay, Mexico.
