Original patents for tracts or
surveys of land in Maryland were given names (titles) which they
bore forever after. Francis Taylor I was surely some relation
and possibly a son of Thomas Taylor, son of Robert Taylor,
who on 4 Dec 1672, in Baltimore Co., MD, "Robert Taylor,
planter, of Gunpowder River, for 1000 pounds of tobacco, a deed
conveying to Joseph Peircey, carpenter, of Back River, the 100-acre
tract "Taylor's Delight," on the east side of
Gunpowder River. Witnesses: John Taylor, John Waterton."
How did Taylor's Delight come into possession of Francis
Taylor later? Did he inherit it? Or was this a Lease which was
Released back to Robert Taylor?

4. Francis Taylor II (Francis Taylor I3,
Thomas Taylor2, John Taylor1) was born 14 DEC 1709 in St. James
Par., Anne Arundel Co., MD, and died 1764. He married Elizabeth
Empson 06 OCT 1729 in St. George's Par., Baltimore Co., MD, daughter
of James Empson and Rebecca ____. She was born abt 1699 in St.
George's Par., Baltimore Co., MD. She was the widow of Mark Whitaker
and had four children by him.
On 30 Aug 1725 in Baltimore Co., MD, Mark
Whittakor and Elizabeth his wife, John Hawkins Jun. and Rebecca
his wife, Ann and Rachel Emoson of Baltimore Co., the daughters
and coheirs of James Emson, petition to have the 500 acres left
to them by James Emson in his will resurveyed, with Liberty
to involve all surplus land contained, and also to add all vacancies
thereunto contiguous. The warrant was issued on 20 Dec 1720. The
land was resurveyed and found to contain no more than the quantity
aforesaid, and there was no vacant land contiguous. Elberton
was now granted to Mark Whittakor and Elizabeth his wife, John
Hawkins Jun. and Rebecca his wife, Cornelius Poulson (who has
since intermarried with Ann Emson) and Ann his wife and Rachel
Emson.
In those days widows and widowers had
to remarry quickly, the women for a protector, and the men for
someone to care for their home and mother their children. Mark
Whitaker died 1 May 1729, St. George's Par., Baltimore Co., and
Elizabeth married Francis Taylor five months later. Her name was
spelled Whiteaker; the parish register original document is in
the Maryland Historical Society. They signed a prenuptial agreement
between Elizabeth Whiteacre of Baltimore Co., widow, and Francis
Taylor of same county, planter, conveying to Francis Taylor for
his natural lifetime, then to the heirs of his body and Elizabeth
Whiteacre, by the said Francis to be begotten, part of one moiety
of a tract of land, lying near under Deer Creek within the County,
called Elberton.
In Jun 1733, Francis Taylor was
indicted for not taking care of his stepchildren, Mark Whitaker's
orphans. The case was settled 6 Nov 1733 when there appeared no
further cause of prosecution and Francis was ordered to pay the
several respective fees due the several officers of the court
(Baltimore Co., MD, Families).
On 29 Aug 1734 in Baltimore Co., James
Cobb assigned 50 acres of a land warrant, part of a warrant for
400 acres originally assigned to Cobb by William Cox of Cecil
Co., MD, to Francis Taylor. James Cobb was undoubtedly
the only son of James Cobb who married Rebecca Emson, widow of
James Emson, 30 Oct 1709, and died 12 Mar 1718 (the parents of
Elizabeth Empson).
On 1 Sep 1734, Francis Taylor had 50 acres
of land surveyed and patented it under the name Taylor's Delight
on 6 Oct 1740 (the application, survey, and patent process took
several years).
In 1735 he conveyed to Jacob Giles 200
acres, part of Elberton. Note that two of Francis and Elizabeth's
children were born in St. George's Par., Baltimore; four were
born in Anne Arundel Co.; and the 7th child was born in Rowan
Co., NC. In 1746, Francis and Elizabeth sold their land in Baltimore
Co., MD, Taylor's Delight (which now lies in Westminster
Dist., 2 miles N.W. of Westminster, Carroll Co.) to James Risteau
(Baltimore Co., MD, Deed Abstracts, Liber T.B. No. E, f.
131).

It was not uncommon for a father to be
fiercely loyal to his king, while a son chose to fight for the
Revolution. It may have been their son Francis Taylor IV (called
Jr.) who received a Revolutionary Bounty Land Warrant in Kentucky,
as "officers and soldiers of Virginia who received bounty
lands in Kentucky. Not all of them settled in Kentucky after the
war and there is no way to verify that the following individuals
actually came to Kentucky. These are taken from old Quisenberry
records. According to the old records, Bounty lands were received
primarily in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio" (Kentucky
Revolutionary Soldiers).
