Arrena Stephens, wife of Stephen P. Goen Mother of Elizabeth Goen who md. Ferdinando San Francisco Taylor ~ (Parents of Erie Catharine Taylor who md. W. W. Wilks)

Arrena Stephens was born 1817 in W. Canada. Her mother's name is unknown. The only person in Jackson Co., IN, records who could have been her father was Jonathan Stephens/Stevens (b. 1780-90), who moved from Connecticut to Canada to New York to Indiana, mentioned in article about "Granny White Cemetary located near Leesville, Guthrie Twp, Lawrence Co, Ind. The 'Granny White' house (which is now re-located at Spring Mill State Park) stood very near the cemetary. The place is abandoned and badly overgrown. We are indebted to Bernice Martin of Bedford and others who copied the inscriptions several years ago. These records have been published in the Indiana Magazine of History, June 1939." Following is an abstract from the Leesville Sun (Jan 30, 1879):

Sally Cummings b. Conn. near N.Y. boundary (Oct 27, 1785, d. Jan 21, 1879). Her parents moved to N.Y. near the Hudson R. in Catskills, where she m. 1803 Silas Sutherland. They then went to Canada near Toronto. In 1820 Sally & Silas and 6 ch. along with Jonathan Stevens and Major Cummings (Sally's brother) started to Ind. where the major had been previously. In Ohio, a few miles east of Vevay, Silas d. suddenly and was buried. She continued west to Sparksville, Jackson Co. May 5, 1821, she m. David White and 3 yrs later they built the log house (above mentioned). By this second marriage she had 3 children.

Jonathan Stephens (Jr.), b. 1780-90 in CT, son of Jonathan Stephens, Sr., immigrated in 1820 to Sparksville, Jackson Co., IN. He was traveling with the a Major Cummings, his sister Sally Cummings Sutherland, and her Sutherland children and family ~ a group which had moved from CT to Canada together.

On 21 May 1834, James Stephens was the first of that surname to have an original patent in Jackson Co., IN (Jackson County Original Patentees Plat Book in court house), for 40 acres in Twp. 7 North, Range 6 East, Sect. 23, 40 acres; p. 25.

In the 1840 census of Jackson Co., IN, Jonathan Stephens was enumerated as, 1 m. 10-15, 1 m. 15-20, 1 m. 50-60, 1 f. 10-15, 1 f. 30-40. On the following page were Elisha Goings 30-40 family, John W. H. Gowings 30-40 family, and Shederick Wrenn 30-40.

Jonathan died bef 1854 in Jackson Co., where his will and the Final Settlement of his estate were recorded:

Last Will and Testament of Jonathan Stephens deceased, John F. Carr Executor vs. The Heirs and Creditors, for final settlement. Now at this time comes the said Executor and files his account current or final settlement sheet which is in the words and figures following to wit. (Here inset it) by which it appears that there has come into his hands, of said executor, assets belonging to said estate to be administered amounting to $533.37. That said executor has paid out for expenses of Administration funeral expenses, and other privileged claims together with the deficiency between the sale bill and inventory $554.20 leaving a ballance due to said Executor of $20.85. Which settlement being examined by the Courts is in all things approved. And the Court being satisfied that said Executor has fully administered said Estate he is hence discharged from further liability as such executor, all of which is ordered adjudged and decreed by the Court.

The youngest child of Stephen P. Goen and Arrena Stephens, Edmund S. Goen, was born Apr 1861, and it's possible that's when she died.

William Thomas, who fought in the 1846 U.S. war with Mexico, met General Zachary Taylor; received a Texas land grant, went home to Indiana, met and married Angeline, and then moved to Iowa, where their daughter Marie Elizabeth Thomas was born. Later they moved to Texas. Marie married R. L. Taylor, brother of F. S. Taylor who married her cousin Elizabeth Goen. William and Angeline had another daughter Allie, also. Allie's daughter Margaret Underwood married her first cousin, William Sterling Lee Taylor, a son of R. L. Taylor.

On 19 Jun 1900, Angeline Thomas was enumerated in the census of Meridian Pct. 1, Bosque Co., TX, as the mother-in-law age 70 IN-NY-Canada, of her son-in-law R. L. in hh 68-68 as R. L. Taylor head 64 KY-VA-KY farmer, Elizabeth wife 63 TN-IN-KY, Clayburn son 32 TX-KY-TN, Fred son 22 TX-KY-TN, Joe son 21 TX-KY-IN, Alleta granddaughter 10 TX-TX-TX, Zelda granddaughter 8 TX-TX-TX; p. 133. Reportedly Angeline Stephens Thomas died there the same year.

In the 1810 census of Fairfield Co., CT, lived Jonathan Stephens, Jr., and Jonathan Stephens, Sr. The 1810 census lists only the head of house and few categories of age. The first census we can be sure it's the right Jonathan was 1840 in Jackson Co., IN, as Jonathan Stephens, 1 m. 10-15, 1 m. 15-20, 1 m. 50-60, 1 f. 10-15, 1 f. 30-40. On the following page were Elisha Goings 30-40 family, John W. H. Gowings 30-40 family, and Shederick Wrenn 30-40.

It is believed the father of Jonathan Stephens, Sr., was Obadiah, b. Stamford, Fairfield Co., CT.
